Players Newsletter September ’13
Welcome to Porthtowan Players Palace of Varieties musings, momento’s and meanderings!
Just a mo – I’m still in 1910.
Hiya all – diary dates and info coming up.
Just before I leave the last century I must congratulate everyone involved in the Old Time Music Hall. A lot of work was put into it in a very short time (I know Dick and Tanya burnt a lot of mid-night oil). What a fun, successful show it was.
A fairy tale adventure
Shelley and her gang are putting a lot of effort into getting the show ready while still making rehearsals fun for the kids. If you can help with front of house, set building, make-up, hair dressing etc. please contact Shelley on 01326 314696.
Show dates are: Wed 28th Oct – Sat 2nd Nov (matinee only on Saturday)
Gordon Giltrap concert
Tickets are now available here for this fund raising evening. Posters are also nearly ready to be distributed. If you can help with posters or want tickets please contact John (number as above).
Dick Whittington
Dick had heard as many jokes/puns as he wants so I’ll just stick to telling you the first read through will be held on 13th October at 8pm after the kids rehearsal. Rehearsals will begin in early November. Production dates will be February half-term as usual. Be there or be nibbled by a rat!
Singing for fun
This will start directly after the panto. Once again ably run by our own, our very own, Glynis!
All are welcome to attend these fun evenings so a good way of introducing friends/potential new members to the group. These evenings will be lead into our next show….
Spring cabaret this time directed by Tanya. This show will take place during the May bank holiday. More details to follow.
Two plays and a pasty returns for August. As before there will also be an opportunity for those of you who prefer singing to acting.
The plays – ‘After the ball is over’ (3 men and 3 women) and ‘Grandma’s photograph’ (3 men and 3 women) are both set at the beginning of the first world war. 2014 being the anniversary of the start of the Great war.
Please let Bar know if you are interested in being in either of the plays.
CDA annual awards and dinner. 26th October
List now open.
Let Bar know if you want to go. Details to follow as soon as they are announced. (Note from Dick – a number of other groups have joined CDA this year, and will be sending a party to the dinner, so we need to get our numbers ready to send in as soon as booking opens, as space is limited. Don’t miss it! With or without nominations for Players shows, it is our main social night of the year, and always a good evening)
Gilbert and Sullivan
Looking much further ahead, Dick would very much like to put on another Gilbert and Sullivan in May 2015. He didn’t feel we could do this in 2014, because currently we are low on numbers to be able to do a lot of 4-part harmony, so we can only do G&S if this improves. We realise that people can’t give a definite commitment that far ahead, but we do need to know in principle if members (or new members!) would like to be involved, so that we can make a decision. We had great fun – and great success! – with Pirates three years ago, so if you think you might like to be involved, PLEASE let Dick or Bar know NOW. The show is likely to be HMS Pinafore – lots of scope for fun, and harmony singing, with a number of principal parts (particularly men!)
